Mitch Cox has been the assistant director of athletics since 2002. He wrote a memoir of his college experience here at Chico State called "Fat Head Goes to Chico." His book brought an entirely new genre to locally published books by highlighting his college experience here.
Q. When did you attend Chico State? A. From 1978 to 1981.
Q. What made you choose Chico State? A. I attended CSU Northridge my first year of college, but I didn't like it. So, I closed my eyes and put my finger on a map; that's how I ended up here.
Q. After college you left Chico, what made you come back? A. I came back in 2002 for the assistant director athletic position here at Chico State.
Q. Is it good to be back? A. Yes, it is so good. I feel like so many Chico State graduates try to stay, but it is hard to make a living. Once alumni figure out how, they come back. Also, it's a great place to raise your kids.
Q. Any regrets moving back to Chico? A. I miss the ocean. It was an actual factor that my wife and I discussed before we moved.
Q. What does your wife do in Chico now? A. She works in housing on campus; and I walk over every Wednesday and go to lunch.
Q. Do you do the same things now that you did as a student? A. No, hopefully I have matured and now make wiser decisions.
Q. Your book, "Fathead Goes to Chico," what is it about? A. It is written into vignettes of things I remembered years after graduation. I put it on the back burner, and then, in 2007, it was my New Year's Resolution to finish.
Q. Why Fathead? A. You have to read the book to find out.
Q. Are you working on anything else? A. Yes, I am currently working on two other books.
Q. When and where do you write? A. I usually write when I travel. Airplanes are great - there is nothing else to do.
