The Men of Honor and Associated Students Multicultural Affairs Council will present the Second Annual Black History Month Awareness and Step Show on Friday and Saturday to kick off Chico State's various Black History Month events.

Harwell Lang helped coordinate the event, which he said is a movement to bring people together to share and celebrate diversity.

The two-day show will be held in the Bell Memorial Union auditorium. Friday's show begins at 6 p.m. and general admission is $8 and student admission is $5. Admission for Saturday's show is $10 for everyone.

The Men of Honor is a group of black men on campus and in the community that mentors children and meets once a week to discuss issues. They have recently been working with students at Chico High School to help stimulate discussions on diversity. Lang prompted students to write essays and poems that will be read at Friday's event.

As a role model in the community, Lang is proud of being a young black man in college and sets an example for future students.

"The goal is to help the children of tomorrow realize they can do what we did," Lang said. "It's passing the baton."

The event will include creative writing, informal speaking, poetry, and step dance. The event will be broken up into two days because of the amount of performances.

Lang said Friday will be an educational day with two keynote speakers, an essay competition and a song competition. Saturday will show off artistic talents with a dance competition and a step show.

Lang said the event will make knowledge entertaining. He expects a better turnout than last year's event and said both days will be packed to capacity.

Everyone is welcome at the event and Lang hopes people will have more than a fun time.

"We like everybody to come a little bit empty and leave a little bit full."
