The cast of "Le Noel Deprave: A Burlesque Holiday Show" gets together for a photo at the Chico Cabaret. "Le Noel Deprave" is a vaudevillian burlesque show that will showcase classic holiday musical numbers with a sexy twist. Tickets are $15 at Creative Apple on Pillsbury Road.

Santa Claus gets some smooches from his helpers during rehearsal for "Le Noel Deprave: A Burlesque Holiday Show" at Chico Cabaret. The show will run Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through Dec. 23.

There's nothing quite like stripping elves to get Chico into the Christmas spirit.

When you think of the holiday season, you might think of Santa Claus, Christmas lights and snow. Unless you have a dirty mind like director Phil Ruttenburg does, you may not think of a sexy Mrs. Claus dressed with Christmas lights on a stage full of snow. But that's what Chico Cabaret plans to bring to the stage with "Le Noel Deprave: A Burlesque Holiday Show."

"I'm sure some people will love it, but we're always pushing the limits here," Ruttenburg said.

The show will bring a "little bit naughty and a little bit nice" for the holidays, Ruttenburg said. The audience will see "Mrs. Claus like you've never seen before!"

It will be a twisted take on classic holiday numbers and songs. All the while, beautiful men and women will be dancing in costumes on a stage set to look like a beautiful Christmas scene.

"There will be a lot to see," Ruttenburg said.

Burlesque shows originate from the 19th century, showcasing vaudeville humor and music hall entertainment acts. Dressed in bright, full costumes, like those seen in the film "Moulin Rouge," women took stage to provide adult entertainment. The striptease numbers in burlesque shows are more artistic than those that can be seen in today's strip clubs; they provide more-theatrical enjoyment.

Bored of the classic holiday shows that take stage year after year, Ruttenburg wanted to present something new, fun and sexy while keeping in tune with the holidays.

Dancing girls, comedy acts and twists on classic Christmas songs will introduce the holiday burlesque show to Chico.

"It's not meant to be sleazy, but a classy affair," Ruttenburg said. "It's a step towards big city entertainment (for Chico)."

The show will bring something for everyone, he said.

"It's not just going to be stripping, but real talent and great numbers that people will enjoy, with a lot of comedy such as old-time sketches similar to those seen on the 'Carol Burnett Show,'" Ruttenburg said.

Chico Cabaret came in first place in the Performing Arts Company category in the Chico News and Review's "Best of Chico" picks for 2006. The cabaret isn't afraid of trying new things, and this shows through its lively and original shows.

The holiday burlesque show plans to hold up to Chico Cabaret's reputation. Not suited for kids, it's a great way for grownups to escape. The show is rated for mature audiences because of nudity and strong language.

This holiday burlesque show, opening Thursday, will be one worth seeing. It plays at 7:30 p.m. every Thursday, Friday and Saturday through Dec. 23. Tickets are $15 and can be bought at Creative Apple in the Almond Orchard Shopping Center at 2201 Pillsbury Road. Call 895-0245 for more information.
