Not many 23-year-olds can say they run their own company, work for an independent record label and book bands for a local nightclub, all while attending school.
Bri Medford can.
Medford is a senior who is double-majoring in music industry and music recording. The busy young woman is the in-house booking agent for Off Limits, the owner and general manager of her own production company, Holy Hell Productions, and the concert production coordinator for Wild Oak Records, a record label on campus.
Medford recently became the booking agent for Off Limits, where she does the scheduling for every band that plays there.
With Medford taking over the position, the club is going to be seeing a change.
"I want to bring in new musical genres," Medford said. "I want to appeal to all ages and all types of music lovers."
In the past, Off Limits had been known for its punk rock and metal shows, but Medford wants to change that. She is planning to book bands of eclectic genres, including country, reggae and acoustic folk-rock.
There are a couple of "downfalls," as Medford puts it, to Off Limits. First, because it's a bar, the audience is limited to those 21 and over. Second, it's far from downtown, where most of the nightlife in Chico is centered. But Medford is hoping the variety of music will attract a larger audience.
Medford will be trying to book about 15 to 20 bands a month at Off Limits. She will have help filling some of those spots because she works with other local production companies such as Devil Kat Rock Productions, which mainly books punk bands, and Il Padrino, which books more metal bands.
She has a good work ethic, too.
"I always call everyone back, even if I have 15 messages," she said. "I want to be able to work with people again."
Things are looking pretty good for her production company, Holy Hell. Medford started the Chico-based company last summer. She has six employees, which includes a street team that passes out fliers at Thursday Night Market.
There is a big variety of shows coming up at Off Limits.
On Sunday, there is going to be a Wild Oak Records fundraising event at the club.
"It's going to be a Celtic folk night," Medford said.
The Holy Hell kickoff show will be at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 28 and will feature local songwriters Jon Leroy, Erin Lizardo and Peech.
Medford would like to continue what she is doing after she graduates, she said. She really enjoys doing promotion, touring and putting on shows.
It seems Medford has got her work cut out for her, working three jobs while attending college. She will be the first to tell you that it's not easy. Still, it looks like she has it all under control.
