MVP awards are cool, the Super Bowl trophy is dope, but polls are just plain whack.
While Internet browsing, I read on the Chico State athletic Web site that the 'Cats baseball team was recently ranked No. 4 in the inaugural NCAA West Regional Poll, which was released last week.
Fourth?
That seemed a bit high to me.
Mind you, the team - as of Sunday - is tied for sixth place in its California Collegiate Athletic Association conference.
The Sonoma State Seawolves are placed second in the CCAA, while the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros are fourth. The 'Cats are barely playing at 0.500 and - unless they kick their offense and pitching into gear in the home stretch - their hopes of making the post season for the 14th consecutive year are doomed.
I tried, like the reporter I am, to find out more about this NCAA West Regional poll.
I wanted the five W's: Who, what, when, where and why? - no luck.
I scratched my head thinking: "Who in the heck does this voting?"
Fans? Boosters? The coaches?
I want to know who voted and what the votes were based on - clearly they weren't based on stats.
I've heard stories about past editors getting crap for talking smack, so don't get me wrong, I'm all for the underdogs.
Shoot, my hometown teams are notorious for being choke artists, but it's hard to say this Chico State team is going to pull through in the last week of play if it hasn't been consistent throughout the entire season.
Polls have absolutely no value and are a big reason why we have bandwagoners.
I know y'all work hard on the diamond but seriously, get it together.
There's nothing worse than having a team with a bunch of T.O.s and Ocho Cincos.
I for sure will not be wearing my Chico State sweater, thinking of how great of a baseball team we have.
I'll say thanks to the Chico State athletic Web site for pointing out the undeniable inconsistency of the baseball team this season, but the team sure must have been happy to get voted as the fourth favorite.
Come on, guys. Don't act like the chance of playing in the postseason is going to be given to you just because you are the Chico State Wildcats.
If you played like you deserved to be there, maybe there wouldn't be a need for these lame polls to boost your egos.
