Disc golfers will no longer be able to play in a course located in a 25-acre expanse of Upper Bidwell Park, as Chico City Council has decided to restore the area to its "natural habitat."
The 4-3 vote was downtrodden with worries about the surrounding environment, but the solution - simply moving the course somewhere else - is only going to have the same concerns involved, which implies that the conflict may never end.
Chico residents started a referendum process to protest the action taken by City Council, a decision that should not have been made in the first place.
Using the council's logic, all sports in which objects take flight or players run or walk on grass - or, even more hazardous, both - need to be banned.
Disc golf comes with the same environmental risks as any other sport: Trees are able to be hit by baseballs, golf balls and rogue footballs. Grass may be damaged by heavy foot traffic. And, in the case of real golf, grass is trampled by golf carts and spiked shoes and torn up by golf clubs that miss their mark by a few millimeters.
Ultimately, what does disc golf harm? Nothing.
The four City Council members who voted in favor of the ban should take this case as precedent to learn how to fight their "green" battles.
