The commissioner of environmental affairs graduates in December, and the applications to fill the vacant position are due Friday.
Political science major Marshall Riddle plans to apply his skills acquired during his tenure as the environmental affairs commissioner at the state capital, where he will begin working in January, he said.
"I had to leave here to take this great opportunity," Riddle said. "The experience working for the council helped me learn how to work within a larger beurocracy."
Riddle's accomplishments this semester include getting two resolutions underway to better the environmental practices of the campus, he said.
"The first resolution forbids student activity fee funds from being used to purchase plastic water bottles," he said. "The second one is still in the works."
The other resolution, titled "zero-waste," sets a date for the A.S. to become a zero-waste organization, he said. Getting it passed will mainly be the work of the incoming commissioner and A.S. Executive Vice President Julie Wright.
"The person taking on the position will be presenting the zero-waste resolution to the A.S. Board of Directors," Wright said. "It shouldn't be too intimidating- we so a lot of training and hands on work together."
Wright held the environmental affairs commissioner position last year as a sophomore, she said. This year she would like to see more experience.
"The position takes about five hours each week, but people always do more," she said. "It takes real dedication."
Applicants can pick up the applications in Bell Memorial Union, Room 202 and drop them off in BMU, Room 203, Wright said. The deadline for applicants is 5 p.m. Friday, but may be extended to the Friday after break.
"We are trying to get it all taken care of before dead week," Wright said. "It is an applicant-on-hire process, not an election, so we should know by winter break."
