In light of the fires raging across California, the American Red Cross is making camp at the university.

The Cross' Disaster Response Team is setting up an operations center in Yolo Hall because of its space and resources, said Lt. Robyn Hearne of the University Police.

The operations center is one of several being placed in "stand-by" mode in case it is needed, she said. The center will coordinate evacuations and services as needed.

As a precaution, the Butte County Emergency Operations Center has asked the university to prepare to open an evacuation center in Yolo Hall rooms 109-112. This is the second time in recent months that the university has provided relief service to fire victims.

The university set up an evacuation center in Acker Gym June 13 in response to the Humboldt Fire, but it was shortly closed because of a lack of necessity.

Normally, there is not a lot of traffic going through the campus at this time of year, Hearne said. But support vehicles may cause increased traffic over the next few days.

Vehicles going to and from the campus are expected to use normal roads, such as Warner Street, West Sacramento Avenue and West Second Street, she said.

The center is not expected to impact normal university operations.

"We're just making sure they have the tech available," Hearne said.

If volunteer services are needed, a campus announcement will be sent out.
