As the rate of diseases, dysfunctions and sickness increases, many folks rely on prescription medications to relieve acid reflux or soothe stomachaches. Many times, the people with indigestion and heartburn are the same ones eating pepperoni pizza and washing down their pills with Diet Coke.
The root of the problem lies in the foods consumed. Instead of depending on unpronounceable pills, why not try using whole foods as natural remedies?
Macrobiotics is a way of eating that nourishes the body and prevents illness. The diet is continual and consists mostly of whole grains, beans and bean products, vegetables, soups and desserts made without highly-refined sugars.
People who eat a macrobiotic diet stay away from chemically processed foods, dairy products and most animal foods.
A macrobiotic diet is different from any other diet because it is continual and affects not only the body, but the mind and spirit as well.
"You get more mental clarity," said David Briscoe, who has practiced macrobiotics since 1972. "You get better sleep, and you need less sleep which is really great when you have to study for exams."
Briscoe and his wife Cynthia are macrobiotic chefs and teach cooking classes out of their home in Oroville.
Briscoe said cooking and eating a macrobiotic diet leads to fewer colds and flus.
"You have fewer doctors' bills," Briscoe said. "I don't remember having a flu in the last 20 years."
He said before he practiced macrobiotics, he had many illnesses, but the diet's positive effect on his body and mind caused him to want to get up in the morning.
"Macrobiotics gives me all this time and energy," Briscoe said.
