THE GOOD
“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2”
(VIDEO GAME)
There’s a good reason the release of the new “Call of Duty” game was the biggest release for anything, ever. With breathtaking graphics and visceral gameplay, “Modern Warfare 2” earns every penny of its $310 million opening day. The campaign mode is too short, but it manages to keep you captivated with every moment.
“Cyanide and Happyness”
(WEB COMIC)
Good Web comics are usually hit and miss, but “Cyanide and Happyness” never disappoints when making light of tragedies and comic strip cliches. Whether they’re cracking jokes about murder, rape or Internet slang, the oddly drawn stick figures in “Cyanide and Happyness” strip away the boring conventions of tame newspaper strips to craft a consistently good work of comic comedy.
THE BAD
“Band Hero”
(VIDEO GAME)
If you’re wondering what separates “Band Hero” from the slough of other music games, imagine if the soundtrack of “Rock Band” was replaced with songs by Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus. That’s right – it’s the most boring, ear-shattering experience you’ll ever have. Top 40 songs aren’t in “Rock Band” and “Guitar Hero” for a reason. First of all, they’re so basic they wouldn’t be any fun to play and, secondly, pop music today is too shitty to be universally appreciated.
“The Twilight Saga: New Moon”
(MOVIE)
The worst fad of the decade is on the eve of its sophomore film release and it’s probably not going to graduate into obscurity for a long time. Unfortunately, the buzz around Stephenie Meyer’s loathsome series of novels is going to stick around like that itchy sore and violent discharge you got at a house party. “Twilight” already ruined vampire coolness, and “New Moon” promises to turn all werewolves into pathetic losers who try to swoop up on another dude’s girl when he’s not looking.
THE UNDECIDED
“Assassin’s Creed II”
(VIDEO GAME)
With promises of improved gameplay elements, the sequel to “Assassin’s Creed” looks to silence critics of the original. With an upgradeable armor system, a wide array of weapons and an entire city to explore, “Assasin’s Creed II” may finally pack the gameplay to match a gripping story of genetic legacy and historical conspiracy theory.
“OId Dogs”
(MOVIE)
Robin Williams and John Travolta are both prone to moments of simultaneous glory and failure. Travolta went from “Pulp Fiction” to “Battlefield: Earth” over the course of the ’90s, while Williams followed a memorable role in “Good Will Hunting” with “Patch Adams” over the course of one year. With a contrived plot and an obvious set of comic circumstances, “Old Dogs” may be their mutual moment of failure. But with performances from Seth Green, Matt Dillon and the late Bernie Mac, it may be a classically hilarious movie.
