Sex columnist: Sex during menstruation not red alert

What is a 6.9? A good thing interrupted by a period.

A friend sent me a text message with this joke last week. Though I chuckled, it made me wonder why so many people are disgusted at the thought of having sex when the woman is on her period.

For some it is a matter of cultural or religious belief. In Judaism, for example, the Torah forbids a husband from having sex with his wife while she is a “niddah.” A woman becomes a “niddah” when “blood comes from her womb due to her monthly period,” according to an online posting from The National Assembly Jewish Students.

The couple must also refrain from having sex during the seven days following a woman’s period, which are known as the “Seven White Days,” according to the site.

For others, the thought of having sex with a woman who is shedding her uterine lining is just gross. Some may even fear it is harmful to the woman or unsanitary.

Intercourse during menstruation is none of these things. In fact, there are benefits to getting hot and heavy when “Aunt Flo” pays her monthly visit.

When a woman is on her period, she may feel friskier. During the cycle, testosterone levels rise and increase sex drive, so getting in the mood during this time could be especially easy.

Additionally, many women find sex helps relieve menstrual cramps, according to an article on epigee.org, a women’s health site.

Just be aware it is still possible to get pregnant during menstruation, though the risk goes down. Also, STDs can be easily passed through the blood, so it is vital to practice safe sex.

If you want to try riding the crimson wave, it is important to understand things could get a little messy. I recommend you put a large towel underneath you to save the sheets and make it easier to clean up afterward.

To prevent too much gushing during intercourse, the best positions are missionary, where the woman lies on her back and the man is on top of her, or doggy-style, where the woman is on her hands and knees and the man enters her from behind.

Having sex in the shower is also a great option. Everything will instantly wash away, so you won’t see much blood or have to worry about bathing after.

If menstrual sex is simply not an option, you can still have fun with your partner. Fantasize and tease each other about the things you want to do when the period is over, or try experimenting with other erogenous zones on the body. And for the sexually brave, there’s always anal.

Don’t let a little blood get between you and good time.
