Students find job opportunities through passion products, parties

Most students find part-time jobs working in downtown restaurants, clothing stores or on campus. Although these places are common for student employment, there has been a rising trend in the number of students getting paid to party.

This growing part-time job is a Passion Parties consultant.

Carly Anderson, a sophomore nursing major, recently decided to become a consultant after hearing about Passion Parties from a friend, she said. After one week of starting her business, Anderson had scheduled six parties.

“I choose my own hours, I’m my own boss and I get to meet all sorts of people,” Anderson said. “I basically get to party for a living, which is really awesome.”

Passion Parties is a professional company established in 1994 and sells a variety of sensual products, she said. The party-planning company currently has 15,000 consultants in the United States and 2,500 consultants in Canada.

Passion Parties products are designed to promote intimacy and communication between couples, according to the company’s Web site.

Most women do not want to go into a sex store because they feel self-conscious and worried about who they might see while shopping for their sexual fantasies, Anderson said. With Passion Parties, women can order their products in their own home with the help of a consultant.

Amy Gordon, a team manager for Passion Parties in Chico and Gridley, has been in the Passion Parties business for almost two years.

“This job is one of the best jobs for college students, really for anybody,” Gordon said. “I would most definitely recommend it.”

The biggest advantage for college students is the scheduling process, Gordon said.

Consultants plan their own parties and design a business schedule that works for them. Anderson used to make $9 an hour working the night shift from 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. at the Donut Nook in Chico.

“It was hard going to school while having to work those hours,” she said.

Others have become consultants as a way to stay employed without the stress of a more traditional job.

Tanya Brown is a Passion Parties independent consultant in Sacramento, who started her job after working in Chico as a typist for 25 years.

She decided to become a consultant after she developed carpal tunnel from typing and needed a job she enjoyed and would not endanger her health.

The advantages of being a Passion Parties consultant are appealing, Brown said. However, some students may think they are not educated enough about sex to be a consultant or they are not comfortable selling sensual products.

“People think they can’t be a consultant, but it doesn’t take a lot of knowledge to start off,” Brown said.

The corporation provides training and sex education, Brown said.
Consultants can also go on a chat group online or call their sponsor to get help.

Passion Parties provides two different catalogs of products and consultants can choose to sell the more mild products, such as massage oils, or the more sensual products, such as sex toys, she said.

It is easy for students to become consultants and start their own businesses, Brown said. They can either contact a consultant they know or go online to passionparties.com and find a consultant there.

The next step is picking out a kit to sell, which costs anywhere from $169 to $250, Brown said. Consultants usually make the amount of money they put into it within the first couple of parties they schedule.

“I don’t want to sit here and say you buy this kit and you magically make a $1,000 a month,” Brown said. “What I am saying is that sex does sell and Passion Parties are very popular.”
