It took 4:46 into the first half of the Chico State women's soccer season opener against Notre Dame de Namur before Wildcat Brittney Doty pelted Chico's first goal of the game en route to a 5-0 win against the Argonauts.
Another pair of goals was added before halftime by midfielder Kelsey Ikemoto and forward Molly McFadden as the Wildcats outworked their opponents with a total of 25 shots, seven of them on goal, compared to one shot by the Argonauts.
On the defensive side of the field Chico successfully limited their opponents by applying pressure to keep the ball on the Argonauts side for most of the game.
"The chemistry is really good on and off the field," said midfielder Lisa Webster. "We really work hard for each other and I know conditioning wise we were used to playing in the hot weather."
The Wildcats kept the momentum on their side at the beginning of the second half, and although the Argonauts created a few opportunities to put themselves on the scoreboard, the Chico defense countered effectively creating more chances for themselves.
Webster kept the scoring going for the Wildcats with two goals, the first in the 27th minute and the second in the 34th minute, securing the win for her and her teammates.
"Our depths tonight really showed with players off our bench coming and outplaying some of the starters," said head coach Kim Sutton. "It's fantastic when our bench players come in and are the ones who score goals."
The team continues with their season opening weekend against The Academy of Art University at 7 p.m. Saturday at home.
