A man in a sport utility vehicle shot at a man and his passenger in a Honda, killing the 19-year-old driver and wounding the 17-year-old passenger about 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of East 20th Street and Park Avenue.

The driver, Shoua Her, was pronounced dead at the scene and the passenger was immediately rushed to Enloe Medical Center, where he is expected to recover, said Sgt. Rob Merrifield of the Chico Police Department.

Police had not released the passenger's name by press time.

The driver and passenger in the turquoise Honda coupe were waiting to turn left onto East 20th Street from Park Avenue when a red or maroon SUV pulled up beside the Honda in the adjacent left-turn lane and the passenger began to shoot, Merrifield said.

Her tried to drive away, but the car crashed into a light pole on the west side of the intersection as the SUV drove southbound on East 20th Street, Merrifield said.

More than 10 casings and bullets were sprayed across the intersection between where the Honda crashed and where the SUV originally began to fire.

Witnesses saw the passenger in the SUV shoot at the driver's side of the Honda, hitting the driver multiple times and the passenger once, police said.

Mike Petersen, who lives on East 21st Street, around the corner from the shooting, heard six or seven gunshots followed by the sound of the Honda crashing into the steel pole, he said.

"This is usually a safe neighborhood," Petersen said while observing the scene. "I have lived here my whole life and nothing like this has happened near me."

No suspects have been detained yet and the red or maroon SUV has not yet been found, Merrifield said.

The motive for the shooting is unknown.

Police are still processing witnesses and evidence, police said in a press release.

Anyone with information about the shooting can call the Chico Police Department Detective Bureau at 897-5820.
