The Chico State men's soccer team defeated last place Cal State Stanislaus Warriors on Wednesday evening 1-0 - overcoming a second half red card to Ryan Struckmeyer.

After continuous failed passes the Wildcats finally punched in a goal in the 41st minute - via a difficult shot by sophomore Kevin Gibson.

Gibson scored after freshman Aren Dawkins nearly put in a header over the Cal State Stanislaus goalkeeper, and the ball rolled into position for Gibson.

"I just followed the ball," Gibson said.

The Wildcats held the momentum early in the second half, before sophomore Struckmeyer was ejected on a red card that involved a standard tackle attempt.

Head coach Felipe Restrepo said that those things can happen when you choose to tackle aggressively with a 1-0 lead.

Chico State's defense bended but refused to break during the final 32 minutes of the half, and closed out the game by the tally of 1-0.

"They did the little things right in the second half," Restrepo said. "I'm proud of our guys, they're 9-1."

With the win Chico State improves their record to 5-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play - remaining in first place overall in the standings.

The Wildcats head south for their next CCAA contest, at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 at Cal State Los Angeles.
