PALO ALTO - The nation's top collegiate cross country runners kicked up the turf Saturday at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto. The men, led by two-time, first-place winner Scott Bauhs, improved on their 2007 fifth-place finish by coming in fourth. The women, led by 27th overall finisher Tori Tyler, tied UC Irvine for sixth place in the 6-kilometer race.
Lacrosse team battles itself to prepare for season

Amid hot weather and slight breeze, the sweat-soaked Chico State men's lacrosse team suited up Saturday afternoon for its long-awaited matchup against, well, Chico State men's lacrosse. It was the third annual Red/White Scrimmage Game, the first official practice for the upcoming season, made into a full-speed competition.

Women's soccer wins first conference game

Five games into California Collegiate Athletic Association play, the women's soccer team finally notched its first conference win against Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday in a showcase of impressive aerial domination. The goals for the Wildcats, in their 2-1 win, were scored by senior forward Melissa Lindsay, who headed the ball into the goal off a free kick, and senior Abby Stretch, who scored a goal off a header following first-year teammate Jaclyn Thomas' cross from the right side.
Men's soccer team suffers first loss

The Wildcats are no longer perfect. The men's soccer team experienced its first loss of the season Friday, falling to San Francisco State 2-1 in overtime. Unbeaten through its first seven games, the team had a chance to tie the program's longest winning streak in more than 20 years, but two late goals from the Gators spoiled the opportunity.

In my last column, I suggested how to start a running program. But some may have experienced unexplained knee pain. With the pain, a self-prescribed excuse to not run may have been made. But the cause of the pain could have been because of overuse, poor mechanics, anatomy or all the above.

The women's volleyball team ventured to Southern California for the second straight weekend and returned home with a couple of conference wins. Last week, the Wildcats were unable to outlast their opponents, but this week they knocked off Cal State Dominguez Hills first and then beat Cal State L.
Golf team places third in first invitational of new season

Wet conditions, cool temperatures and a 751-mile trip couldn't stop the Wildcats from starting the season strong and placing third in the 37th annual Western Washington University Golf Invitational at Bellingham Golf and Country Club. The Wildcats, led by head coach Travis Brown, battled several top Division II programs including Sonoma State and host Western Washington University.
