Obama uplifts minority students

By Sasha Knox

Less than 150 years ago, African Americans were not permitted to read or write. Forty years ago, Jim Crow laws allowed for segregation, but soon, a black man will step up to run the country. Sen. Barack Obama's platform promoted "hope" and "change," and for many minority students, his election into the White House is the breath of fresh air they've been gasping for.

Professor: No aliens in solar system

By Raelene Willis

Aliens do not exist. At least not in our solar system, according to guest speaker Ben Zuckerman, professor of physics and astronomy at UCLA. "Intelligent life is curious about us, so someone would have come here long ago," Zuckerman said. "Sunlike stars have passed near our solar system, and no one has come here.

As country ready for change, California bans gay marriage

By Katherine Jarvis

A battle started May 15 when the California Supreme Court overturned the ban on same-sex marriage, and while the fight for marriage rights seems to be over with the passing of Proposition 8, the debate is far from over. Three lawsuits have been filed since the state constitution was amended, eliminating the right of same-sex couples to marry, by a margin of 4 percent.

Food drive eases mounting hunger

By Jessica Rhynalds

Living with hunger pains is a reality for many people in Chico. With the unstable economy, one local nonprofit feared a low turnout for the yearly Harvest Food Drive, which started Monday and continues to Friday. "This year, our country is facing an economic crisis," said Holly Nevarez, health and community services professor, whose class is working to collect cans.

By Dionna Mash

Ball cupping and gynecologists' monkey wrenches may seem funny, however, sexually transmitted infections are no joke and the Student Health Center makes it far too easy for students to avoid getting tested. Getting tested once a year is not often enough when sleeping with multiple people in a 12-month span, and if you slept with someone shady, jetting to the center the day after to test your pee for gonorrhea isn't enough time to know if you're in the clear.

Sex Columnist: Chris Thompson: Nerves no excuse

By Chris Thompson

As I stepped onto the bus, heading toward the Student Health Center, I could think of only one thing: How many of the people on this bus have a sexually transmitted infection? I felt the jitters as if I were on a first date. For any student who hasn't gotten tested, my first experience might eliminate any misconceptions.

More information requires better judgment, caution

By Joel Hersch

"I hate books," Christine DaSilva said. "Smelly old books." The Internet makes everything so much more convenient, sophomore DaSilva said. She checks her e-mail 10 times a day - and don't even get her started on Facebook. "I have problems," DaSilva said about her Facebook dependency.

Campus Spotlight: Liberal studies sophomore Jessica Rouman

How did you get involved in volunteering at the Esplanade House? I got involved by living on the ninth floor of Whitney Hall. Whitney had a "theme floor" and the theme was CAVE. What do you gain from volunteering for the homeless shelter? I compare how the homeless live and how we live.

Nicole Williams: Fountain of naivety

By Nicole Williams

Americans hate old people. Ageism abounds in our youth-obsessed culture as the beauty of age has been transformed into liver spots and fine lines. Childhood naivety is valued far more than the wisdom gained with time. Just take a look at the recent election.
