Campus Spotlight: Kristin Bittikofer, senior business major and business founder
Issue date: 11/12/08 Section: Features
Why did you choose the business major?
Business has always been a subject that interested me and it seemed like a good area to pursue. When I came to Chico State I saw how great the professors and overall program was, so I decided to declare a business major.
When did you start your business?
We started researching and developing our business, BogoMaps, around February of this year. After months of developing we launched the site to the public on Columbus Day, 2008, and encouraged people to "Discover something new" and check out our site.
What made you decide to start your business?
Brandon Loyd, my co-founder of BogoMaps, approached me with the basic concept. We thought it was a good idea, we worked well together and we had great developers, so we just decided to go for it.
What does your business do?
Bogomaps.com compiles local sales, specials and coupons, plots their locations on a map and allows users to redeem the coupons through text messages. BogoMaps is completely free for users and offers a sustainable alternative to print coupons, since around 99 percent of print coupons aren't redeemed and become wasted paper.
What are your goals for the business?
We would love to see the business in as many cities as possible. It's a great concept that not only helps the environment but helps people save money and businesses gain customers.
How can a business like yours be beneficial to students? Bogomaps.com helps students save money and provides them with a one-stop destination to find local deals. You can see where the business is located and avoid having to look up its location. You can also have coupons sent to your phone and have them on you at all times, avoiding having to clip coupons or carry print coupons around. Best of all, its totally free to sign up and get the coupons.
What are your goals after you graduate?
I would like to see where BogoMaps takes me, but overall I just want to be working on something that I enjoy and that makes a difference.
