5 keys for the men's basketball season
Issue date: 11/12/08 Section: Hoops Preview
Clink communication
Puck Smith is gone after 21 years, so the returning members of the team have to learn to communicate with and play for coach Greg Clink. They will have to be a model for the younger players, who may have a tough time with an intense college coach who hasn't been around.
Mesh old with new
With 13 new faces, including redshirts, for the 'Cats, the meshing of the veterans and newcomers will be key for chemistry on and off the court. A key relationship will be between senior guard Justin Argenal, who was the point guard of the team, and Junior Russell, the senior transfer from Cal State Fullerton who now holds that position.
Stick to scrappy
Clink has preached that his team will have to focus on outhustling the opponent. The 'Cats have shown good signs of scrappy play early, diving for balls and taking charges in their exhibition opener against the University of San Francisco.
Duet in the paint
Forwards Chris Sharp and Andy Bocian, both 6 feet, 6 inches, a bit undersized compared with most of the big men in the CCAA, must combine to crash the boards and convert on as many second chances as possible. Bocian and Sharp struggled against 6-foot-9-inch Hyman Taylor of the University of San Francisco.
Don't ride the roller coaster
With a squad of Wildcats relatively new with each other, they must focus on the possession at hand, not their conference record or the playoff picture. Clink emphasizes the process his team will have to take to be successful, and Chico State must buy into it to compete this season.
