5 keys for the women's basketball season
Issue date: 11/12/08 Section: Hoops Preview
Half-court execution
The Wildcats will focus on stopping their opponents' transition game and force them to play in the half-court and set the tempo of the game. By forcing opponents into a half-court set, it will provide a more patient approach, rather than a fast-paced game.
Rebounds
Attacking the boards on both sides of the ball will give the 'Cats more scoring opportunities and minimize their opponents' chances. With Renee Goldoff, Christine Vest and Cory Edwards in the paint, the team looks to repeat its authority in the rebound category.
Create defensive pressure
The women's basketball team is known for holding opponents and winning games because of great defense. Last season, the team outscored its opponents by just more than 10 points per game on average. The Wildcats will be looking to dominate on the defensive side again this season.
Minimize turnovers
Last year's team had 18.2 turnovers per game compared with its opponents' average of 20.6. If the 'Cats can reduce this number and keep the positive turnover margin with efficient ball control, they can set the tempo of the game.
Stay healthy
With a young roster and some new faces, the Wildcats must avoid major injuries during the season. Last year, leading scorer Audi Spencer had a season-ending injury down the stretch for the 'Cats, possibly contributing to their early tournament ousting.
