The women's basketball team ended its exhibition series with a tough 95-51 loss to UC Berkeley on Wednesday.

The team was no match for the No. 9 Golden Bears and their offense, which maintained the lead the entire game. The 'Cats shot 12-24 in the first half, trailing the Golden Bears 47-30.

Head coach Brian Fogel was pleased with the improvements the team made both offensively and defensively from its defeat against Stanford University, he said.

"Offensively, we did a better job with our decision making," Fogel said.

Both Stanford and UC Berkeley are ranked in the top 10 of NCAA women's basketball teams, according to The Associated Press 2008-2009 preseason polls.

"It's a great opportunity to play against top teams in the country," Fogel said.

Sophomore center Ashley Washington was excited for the experience to play on the same court against a Division I team, she said.

Playing tough teams such as the Golden Bears brings limitations offensively, but the 'Cats just have to play their style of basketball, she said.

"It was intense," she said. "If we put our mind to it, we can play however we want to."

The offense was sparked with 15 points in the last eight minutes by sophomore guard Molly Collins.

Collins, fired up after the game against Stanford, looked forward to hitting the shots she does in practice, she said.

With a season-ending knee injury last season, Collins only played eight games her freshman year.

She has been working hard and her performance was a confidence booster, Fogel said.

Collins led the 'Cats with 17 points. Senior center Renee Goldoff gathered 11 points and seven rebounds.

The young talent of freshman guard Synchro Bull brought four assists and Washington grabbed four rebounds.

"We were ready to play," Collins said. "It was our last exhibition game and we gave it all we had."

It was a fun environment because everyone on the team had a chance to play, she said.

"It's always about us," Collins said. "We are going to work on a lot of new stuff so we can be prepared for anything any team throws at us."

The team will have plenty of preparation to jump-start its season against the University of Alaska Fairbanks on Nov. 20 in Acker Gym.
