The men's soccer team's season came to an end Friday after losing to Cal State Dominguez Hills at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament in penalty kicks.

Double overtime was not enough to settle the match between the two schools. The Toros needed penalty kicks to beat the Wildcats after 110 minutes of play ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Toros took the lead in the 42nd minute when junior midfielder Brian Alvarez received a pass from senior Kyle Holland and slipped the ball past the goalkeeper.

The Wildcats leveled the score in the 50th minute when junior midfielder Kyle Crain sent a cross into the box that was put away by a streaking junior Benjamin Moukoko.

Chico State had two chances in the second half on shots from Crain and Moukoko but they struck the crossbar.

Since it was the conference tournament, a penalty shootout was needed to decide who would move on to Sunday's final. During the regular season the game would end in a tie.

A penalty shootout consists of five players from each side taking penalty kicks against the opposing keeper. The team with the most successful tries wins the match.

Both teams made their first three attempts, but Toros goalkeeper senior Miguel Benitez was able to block Chico State's fourth attempt, leaving it up to senior Alberto Garcia to clinch the victory by converting the fifth penalty kick and giving the Toros the 5-3 victory.

"We both played extremely hard, left everything on the field. Both teams played their hearts out," Toros sophomore forward Jordan Rover said. "I personally hate to win a game on penalty kicks, I wish there was another way."

Cal State Dominguez Hills lost to Sonoma State in the final game of the CCAA tournament on a penalty shootout.

The loss to the Toros officially goes down as a tie for the Wildcats, their first of the season.

The loss ended the season for the Wildcats, who missed the NCAA tournament. The top four teams in the West Region qualify for the NCAA tournament and the Wildcats ended the season ranked fifth.
