A 23-year-old student was arraigned on charges of battery of his neighbor, vandalism and possession of cocaine Friday.
Nicholas Laythe allegedly assaulted student Nick Haight about 3 p.m.
Nov. 8 at Seventh Street Manor, which he then vandalized, said Deputy District Attorney Kevin Maloney. The damages were less than $400.
Laythe allegedly stole Haight's wallet and cell phone after the attack, said Sgt. David Britt of the Chico Police Department.
"These types of robberies are fairly common," Britt said. "We have a few a week."
This case is unusual because the victim and suspect knew each other and it was in daylight, Britt said.
The court released Laythe under conditions of staying away from Haight, Maloney said. He was scheduled for a search and test of controlled substances that were not prescribed to him.
Laythe is scheduled to return to court Dec. 3.
