Canadian poster finds advice, friendships around globe

Boredom at her data entry job led Smilesforcolby on a search one day for "Survivor"-related material. When she found a message board community that interested her, she was quickly sucked in.
"I read the board frequently while I was working. I wanted to see if I could find any interesting info, facts or spoilers," Smilesforcolby said. "I wanted to see if people could predict what would happen next on the show."
What Smilesforcolby couldn't predict were the close friendships she would make with her fellow posters.
"For the most part I just have online acquaintances, but a few people I talk to about more personal things and share advice with," Smilesforcolby said.
Smilesforcolby is quick to note the differences between online and real life friendships.
"These are people you only know through your computer and from what they tell you," she said.
Despite the differences, Colby enjoys meeting people with common interests that she may never have had the opportunity to meet otherwise.
"It's fun to broaden your circle of friends and meet people from
around
the world," she said.
