Far from the Bay Area's realm of culinary excellence is a grill and
taproom in the heart of downtown Chico. For those who, like me,
crave a piece of home, or those who are just looking for a good
place to eat, get your palates ready.
The mood and tantalizing smells of The Black Crow are enough
just to make you at least turn your head when walking by the
wall-to-wall windows at the front of restaurant. My companion for
the evening and I were pleased with our service from the moment
we walked in. We were given a choice of sitting in the front of the
restaurant where we could gaze out the windows, or in the back
where we could enjoy a more intimate setting. We chose the front
and waited momentarily for our table to be wiped off.
Waiting for our drinks to come, we noticed the wonderful artwork
on the walls next to us. All of the art that we saw had the
same theme of a black crow and added to our full sensory
experience. We began scanning the witty menu, which included
such appetizing items as "smashed potatoes." There were so
many different choices it was really hard to decide which dish to
try.
We decided that garlic fries were a good start ($3.95), even though
the Angry Prawns ($8.25) were intriguing. Our waitress informed
us that it was not a problem to split any of the dishes, which made
ordering easier since we wanted to try so many things. We split
the Pan Roasted Chicken ($12.95), which was the most expensive
thing on the lunch menu. We also ordered the Grilled Chicken
Breast Sandwich ($8.75).
After minutes of talking, we were in awe when our food arrived.
The presentation was extraordinary and the portions were well
worth the already reasonable prices. We began by trying the
smashed potatoes, followed by the chicken and then the
sandwich. After taking a few bites of everything, we were
stuffed.
Our total bill was under $35, which included our drinks, appetizer
and two entrees. I was impressed with the whole experience,
including the comfort, the art, the food and especially the prices. I
want to go back and try the Fuji Apple Salad ($8.25) and also their
dinner menu, which includes such mouth-watering item as BBQ
Baby Back Ribs ($19.95) and Grilled Atlantic Salmon Filet ($
14.95).
The Black Crow Grill and Taproom offers a great dinning
experience without the monumental prices of the Bay Area. So,
whether with business clients or with friends, you will leave
satisfied.
