Watching Tiger Woods sink a 50-foot putt to win the U.S. Open Championship on the 18th hole at Pebble Beach Golf Course by one stroke was a thrill for golf fans around the world last year. Taking lessons can be a rewarding experience for both student and instructor because improvements take place very quickly, said Chico State University student and long-time golfer Brent Stone. "Watching a beginner go from looking awkward and uncomfortable when they first start to play golf to looking confident and relaxed is part of what makes teaching beginners how to play golf so enjoyable," he said.

One of the best ways to begin learning golf is to start out with the small swing. The smallest swing in golf is the putting stroke. This stroke replicates the full swing in many fundamental ways, and learning to putt is easy and free of charge. Most golf courses have a putting green that is open to the public. All you need is a putter, some time and some education about the basics of putting.

The basic elements of golf are, "Having a good grip and moving the putter head with the shoulder and arms in a motion similar to a grandfather clock," said Matt Costa, assistant professional at Tuscan Ridge Golf Course, located on the Skyway between Chico and Paradise.
