As the semester comes to a close, the men's baseball team hopes to delay its summer plans and travel to the Illinois to compete in the Division II College World Series starting May 24.
The Wildcats' spot in the championship depends on if they survive the regionals against the best teams in the West, including California Collegiate Athletic Association champion Sonoma State.
In the regionals the Wildcats faced fourth-ranked Sonoma State, 11th-ranked UC San Diego and Cal State Stanislaus.
In last year's West Regionals, the 'Cats were eliminated by Mesa State in a 9-8 nail biter. Head coach Dave Taylor hopes his team can draw out its season by advancing deeper into the tournament.
"We want to play well and get back to the World Series," Taylor said. "I expect nothing less from this program."
Chico State has a history of success in the NCAA championship tournament with two national championships, in 1997 and 1999.
The Wildcats finished a solid 2008 season third in CCAA regular play with a 24-11 record. The 'Cats finished second in the conference tournament held in Chico. The Wildcats' impressive 39-15 overall record ranks them sixth in the NCAA Division II baseball poll.
