Ex-instructor pleads guilty in weed case

A former instructor pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana in court Aug. 7. Sentencing will take place next month for Elaine Ilana Meiri, a former Hebrew instructor who could face up to three years in prison. Meiri's lawyer, Dane Cameron, will attempt to reduce her sentence to probation since this is her first criminal conviction, he said.
Campus among top 10 green colleges

With about 22 percent of the campus' energy coming from renewable sources, it's no wonder the university keeps getting recognition for its sustainability efforts. The university was named in "10 of the Greenest Colleges in America" by The Daily Green, a sustainability Web site.
Projects pop up around campus

The return of students isn't the only noise around campus as construction projects on all corners of the university are being planned, built and finished. Some of the major projects are the Student Services Center, the Wildcat Recreation Center, Sutter Hall and the planned reconstruction of Taylor Hall.
Partygoers combat violence, police presence first weekend

A heavy police presence downtown came in handy for one student at about 2 a.m. Saturday when he was beaten by a fellow student. Mike Ortalda was leaving a house party between West Sacramento and First avenues, near Warner Street, when Jonathon Laplant, 20, allegedly hit him in the back of the head, Ortalda said.

Thursday 6:27 a.m. Suspicious subject reported on the 1200 block of North Cedar Street. "Male subject outside asking to use reporting party's phone. He told reporting party that he was hiding from the police. Reporting party states subject is crazy and doesn't want him around there.
Women's soccer team digs deep for second win

Aug. 30, 2008It wasn't the prettiest of games for the Chico State women's soccer team as they played the Academy of Art, but two goals, four yellow cards and one red card later the Wildcats bested their opponents with a 2-0 win. Chico forward Emese Grek put her team up early in the first half with a goal in the seventh minute, but frequent mistakes and ball control kept the Wildcats from gaining total control of the game.
Former professor dies at 66

Vern Milliken's family said he lived to put others first. Even up to his last days, the first question he always asked was "How are you?" said Jon Jones, his son-in-law. Milliken showed concern for the lives of others. Milliken, a former professor of professional studies in education, died July 12 at his Red Bluff home after a brief battle with cancer.
Stolen banners may cost almost $2000 to replace
Three or four banners highlighting student achievement were taken this summer from along the creek

Summertime vandalism will cost $1,855. Three or four banners that lined the creekside walkway between Butte and Holt halls were stolen overnight on July 21 or early July 22, said Lt. Robyn Hearne of University Police. The signs highlighted student and campus achievements and were added in 2006, as a reminder of the university's history and its ongoing accomplishments, said President Paul Zingg.

A senior ended her workday early when she turned toward home and saw a cloud of smoke billowing upward from Paradise. "It looked like a bomb went off," Nikki Hays said. She immediately called her parents to check on her family. No answer. After five tries, Hays finally reached her mother.
