The women's volleyball team ventured to Southern California for the second straight weekend and returned home with a couple of conference wins.
Last week, the Wildcats were unable to outlast their opponents, but this week they knocked off Cal State Dominguez Hills first and then beat Cal State L.A., ranked No. 22 in the nation.
"We were so excited, we just all grabbed each other and screamed," outside hitter Lindsay Macias said. "It was our first win that was against a good team, and our energy is so high right now."
In both games, first-year player Makenzie Snyder showed she has the potential to grow into a dominating player after recording 12 kills in each game.
Sophomore Crystal Trifeletti and senior Megan Cape had some crucial kills against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday and didn't look back after a 26-24 first-set win.
During the game, senior Erica Brick displayed her talents yet again, picking apart the defense by putting up 30 assists and 14 digs to sweep the opponent 3-0.
Saturday was an important game for the Wildcats, facing high-ranking Cal State L.A., which possessed a 10-2 overall record coming into the match.
The 'Cats jumped to an early lead, nabbing the first two sets after benefiting from some clutch scores and some errors by the Golden Eagles.
Chico State seemed to capture its second straight sweep with a 17-12 lead in the third set, but an aggressive resistance from the opposition launched the game into a fourth set.
The teams were tied at 19 in the fourth set, but with kills by Trifeletti and senior Macias, the 'Cats were able to end the match successfully, 3-1.
"Lindsay Macias had one of the finest games she's had all year," head coach Cody Hein said. "I don't know about statistically, but her passing was beautiful, her defense was great, she served them out of their offense and was a big weapon for us."
After beating Cal State L.A. the energy will hopefully carry into the practices and games this week, he said.
The Wildcats come home for two straight weeks of home games starting tonight, when they will face Cal State Stanislaus at 7 p.m. They will host three more conference games during the next two weeks against UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay.
The team is ready for home-court advantage in the upcoming matchups, Macias said. The team will play seven of its next nine games at Acker Gym.
"I'd say we're gonna have to serve tough, we have to pass well to be able to do what we do well," Hein said. "We're hoping to double the momentum of our success this weekend and play well for the fans."
