This past weekend, I participated in my first ceremony of wedding bliss. I was a bridesmaid in my mother's second wedding. Coming from a generation in which divorce is common, I guess it isn't that surprising that I was celebrating her most important day before she attended mine.

Holy matrimony is a topic that has always graced the covers of tabloids, but marriage is also hot on the political agenda.

Hollywood nuptials

Actors Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson tied the knot Sept. 27 in Reynolds' homeland of Canada. Hopefully, the newlyweds won't follow the path of failed limelight love matches a la Britney Spears, Jennifer Aniston and Renee Zellweger.

Their best bet is to avoid the couple's curse of a reality TV show profiling their marriage.

The kiss of (marital) death

To have a successful relationship in Hollywood, staying out of the spotlight is a must. Avoid paparazzi like the plague and never sign up for an MTV reality show.

Evident in the divorces of three celebrity couples, love does not fit into an hour time slot between "My Super Sweet 16" and "Cribs."

Singers Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson made it through four seasons of "Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica." Drummer Travis Barker and wife Shanna Moakler struggled and divorced after two seasons of "Meet the Barkers." Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro called it quits after only seven episodes of "'Til Death Do Us Part: Carmen and Dave."

MTV should have a show that follows the exes through couples therapy and the divorce proceedings - it would make for good ratings.

Vote no on Proposition 8

From Ellen DeGeneres to Chico City Council Member Scott Gruendl, public figures are speaking out against the proposition that is also known as the "Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry Act." Trying to add a new amendment to the California Constitution that keeps marriage between a man and woman is just wrong.

Love is blind and Catholic wing nuts should worry less about gay couples finding true happiness and more about preventing the violation of altar boys' rectums.
