Abigail Schifferle, a Chico State online student, fell to her death May 4 while hiking in Maui, Hawaii, where she was living, according to a university press release.
Schifferle graduated from Chico High School and Butte College Connection in 2006. She later moved to Philadelphia for two years to attend Temple University and fence on the NCAA Division-I foil team.
When she returned to Chico State, she helped form and coach the Chico State Fencing Club.
The university flag will be lowered in her memory.

Abby, who was smart, self-aware, and very droll, would have shrugged off that knucklehead's thoughtless remark as unworthy of notice. But it would have been satisfying to see her match wits (or better yet, match swords) with such a clueless lout.

I think that coment is awful, and if anyone has the power to delete it, it should be done. I'm sure Abigail was a bright and adventurous person, which I've read plenty about. I know The Orion editors are able to edit these comments, and I think that's awful. I hope no one in her family or circle of friends sees that. She was lucky to spend her last few days in beautiful Hawaii.
