Even with a recession and furloughs, the Career Planning and Placement Office at Chico State reassured students that there are still jobs to be had by holding the Fall Business, IT, and SAP Career Fair on Wednesday.

A total of 41 companies were in the Bell Memorial Union auditorium trying to recruit potential employees for jobs and internships.

Students were able to build interviewing skills, networking and hand out resumes in hopes of landing future jobs.

Kristin Nakasako, one of the career fair directors and a member of the Phi Chi Theta business fraternity, who helps organize the event, hopes students will gain opportunities at the fair.

“We’re trying to give students the first steps into the real world,” Nakasako said. “We want to open their eyes to all the aspects of the business world.”

It takes six months just to plan the event but it is well worth it, said Megan Odom, an associate director at the Career Center.

“Even in economic difficulty we want students to know that there are still opportunities if they are looking for careers and internships,” she said.

It is also encouraging to see Chico State alumni as representatives recruiting for the various companies, Odom said.

Students can learn how to network from former students, who can be great resources, she said.

“They are able to learn about internships, job opportunities and just connect,” Odom said.

Adam Curone, a member of Phi Chi Theta, thinks the career fair is a great place to meet new people.

“This fair gives you a chance to introduce yourself to employers and get your name out there,” Curone said. “You get to see what their company is doing and what they are looking for.”

Companies are looking for a lot in potential employees, said David Fuss, regional sales manager for Techtronic Industries and one of the recruiters.

“For our company we want enthusiastic, self-motivated people looking to make a contribution at TTI,” Fuss said. “Sales and marketing experience is good, but we want someone with leadership qualities who is business oriented.”
