Chico State student dies from unknown causes

CSU Chico

Tragedy struck Monday morning as a Chico State student was found dead in a house on the 1200 block of Chestnut Street.

Gina Maggio, a 21-year-old sophomore from San Jose, was not breathing when she was discovered.

Police and fire units responded, but Maggio was pronounced dead once paramedics arrived shortly after 10:30 a.m., according to a Chico Police Department press release.

She did not live at the house and had spent the night there after visiting a friend, police said.

Maggio came to Chico State in fall 2007 after graduating from Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose and was a communication sciences and disorders major with a minor in child development, according to a university press release.

Sgt. Rob Merrifield of the Chico Police Department said police had not found signs of foul play, but a cause of death had not been determined.

An autopsy and toxicology tests will be performed, but the process normally takes several weeks, Merrifield said in a press release.

Her family have invited Maggio's friends to attend a Viewing on Sun., Oct. 11, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Lima-Campagna-Alameda Mission Chapel, 600 S. Second St., in San Jose.

Funeral Mass will be Mon., Oct. 12, at 1 p.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 15333 Woodard Rd., San Jose.

Interment will follow at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, 490 Lincoln St,,  Santa Clara.
