While it is apparent that she is young, talented and part of a hit TV series, Amber Stevens is more than a pretty face.
Stevens stars in “Greek,” which airs at 9 p.m. Mondays on ABC Family, and has joined with the Pledge Yourself To Do Something campaign to raise awareness of Girls Inc., a program that helps empower young women.
“It’s an amazing program,” Stevens said. “I’m hoping I can figure out a way to personally get myself involved in it and not just through the show.”
Being an actress can help raise awareness to these programs, she said.
Acting, however, was not necessarily something Stevens always wanted to.
“I’m not someone who has spent my entire life in acting classes and drama and being in all those programs,” Stevens said. “I only went to community college here in Santa Monica and I was only a part time student and then ‘Greek’ came along and changed my life.”
“Ashleigh Howard,” Steven’s character originally played a supporting role but, as time went on, the producers gave her more material, especially this season, she said.
“I’ve had a lot of fun trying to figure out exactly how I feel ‘Ashleigh’ would handle situations,” Stevens said. “It’s been hard but a lot of fun.”
Stevens is grateful to work with the tight-knit crew from “Greek,” she said.
“We’re a family and that’s not just the cast, that’s every single person in the crew,” Stevens said. “The producers of ‘Greek’, camera operators, makeup and hair department, we are all very, very close.”
Though Stevens never had the opportunity to attend a traditional university, after being on the show, she would join a sorority, she said.
“Especially after being on this show, I’ve learned so much more about it and how fun it could be and how many people look back fondly on their times of being in the Greek system,” Stevens said.
Some of the Greek community, however, was not all that thrilled about the show because it may have cast them in a bad light, Stevens said.
But the show highlights the positive aspects of Greek life, especially philanthropy, she said.
In the episode, “The Half-Naked Gun,” an undie-run is turned into a clothing drive.
“We’re actually really proud to show all sides of what the Greek system promotes,” Stevens said.
This season, Stevens reveals the “ZBZ” house will no longer be the number one house on campus and, as the new sorority president, the responsibility will be on “Ashleigh’s” shoulders.
Though the show airs on the ABC Family channel, the subject matter of “Greek” can be pretty adult. “Greek” is definitely diverse.
